How patience leads to success

Patience + process = success

For this habit hack, I want to get a little philosophical.

But I’ll keep it simple.

Here it goes...

Be patient.

But wait there’s more.

Be patient...and stick to the process.

When you do both of these things, you will see results. Whether it’s in your personal life or your business or your health. Be patient with yourself, stick to the process that you’ve made for yourself, and you will see results.

How is this a hack?

I can hear what you’re saying, isn’t a hack supposed to make something faster and easier?

Well, yes and no. Any habit hack is different. Some are practical methods to get things done faster for sure.

But mostly a habit hack is just a way of hacking your brain to get results. That means hacking your way past typical human behaviors that can trip you up.

And one of the behaviors that you need to hack your way past is the desire for immediate results.

Don’t get me wrong. Results are good. Your brain craves them and you thrive on them. But when it comes to long term goals, you need to be able to see past the need for immediate gratification.

Goal vs. Process

This is where it helps to distinguish between a goal-oriented mindset and a process-oriented mindset.

A goal-oriented mindset is just like it sounds. This is a mindset that is focused on one thing only, and that’s the goal in mind.

A process-oriented mindset is also what it sounds like. This is a mindset that is focused on the process itself, the method you’ve decided will help you achieve the goal.

Now obviously you need a mix of both mindsets, but it can lead to negative results if you only think from a goal-oriented mindset.

For example

Have you ever heard of someone that tried to lose weight, then they did, and they gained it all back? I’m sure you know someone like that. It might even be you.

People that seesaw on their weight gain have adopted a goals-oriented mindset. They’re focused on the goal, so they’re willing to do anything to get to that goal.

Whether it’s starving themselves, giving up any and all carbs, or working out five times a day, they’re willing to do anything to get in shape.

Then they lose the weight and feel great and suddenly...there’s less incentive to punish themselves and they gain it all back.

That’s because they were only focused on a goal-oriented mindset.

Just to be clear, seeking a goal is good, but a process-oriented mindset is also crucial for success.

Be - Do - Have

The process-oriented mindset is just another way of talking about the Be - Do - Have model. In order to get the results you want, you have to be the person who creates those results.

That’s why you need to focus on dedication to the process. Enjoy the process. If you don’t enjoy it, change it until you do. Commit to the process in a way that works for you.

That’s why patience is important.

90% of success...

How many times have you given up on a goal, only to realize months or even years later, that you could have succeeded if you’d only stuck to it?

Look, the reality is, most success isn’t rocket science. There’s a reason they say 90% of success is just showing up. Because most people don’t keep showing up.

Sure, everybody starts goals. Setting a goal for yourself feels great.

But do most people finish goals? Why do gym memberships spike in the new year? If you’ve been to the beach this summer, then you know not everyone keeps those gym commitments.

The greatest habit hack?

Just be patient...and commit to the process.

The process is key. Make sure you’ve thought your process through. Visualize all the steps necessary. Remove any unnecessary stress or negative emotions. Make sure the process is something you like to do.

Give yourself small rewards when you’re faithful to the process. Nothing wrong with giving yourself tiny goals and tiny rewards.

But above all, be patient.

Stick to it and just keep showing up. Rome wasn’t built in a day. [insert your own cliche here].

Come to think of it...why are there so many cliches and stories about patience being the key to success? (Tortoise and the hare, anyone)?

I wonder why...
