My RIP method for creating habits that last

Radical, Immediate, Public

 

To create lasting, effective change in your life use the RIP method. 

 

Do something radical, do it immediately, and do it publicly. 

 

This is a simple idea, but I’ll briefly explain each part. 

 

Radical

 

To create change do something that is radically different from what you’ve done before. There’s a time and place for slow and steady wins the race, but there’s also a time for making big, bold moves. 

 

Radical doesn’t mean “desperate.” It just means doing something big with the confidence that you’re going to pull it off. Habits have to take root at the level of your identity. When you make a big move, you’re telling yourself on a subconscious level, “this is me.” 

 

If you’re gonna start getting up early in the morning to work out, don’t ease your way into it. Don’t just gradually move the clock back. Be there at the gym, working out, going balls to the wall at the moment you said you’d be there. 

 

Immediate

 

Like I said there’s a truth to consistency and just putting in the work over the long haul. Nothing wrong with that. But when it comes to big lifestyle changes, sometimes we picture these things in the distant future. Some goals just seem too hazy and hard to achieve to picture them “now.”

 

That’s why you have to make radical change and do it immediately. Not next week. Not after the weekend. Now. Go ahead and get started on that crazy plan right now. 

 

What if I fail? 

 

So what? Nobody that’s a success has never failed. If you make bold moves then you’re bound to fall on your face every now and again. When that happens, get up and try again. But here’s the other what if?

 

What if you don’t fail? What if you try something big and...it actually works? 

 

How many times have you put off something and then when you finally start working towards a goal, you find that it wasn’t as difficult as you thought? Sometimes the hardest thing is getting started.

 

Change has to happen on the level of identity. When you experience success and start to realize “I actually can do this” then that affects you on the level of your identity.

 

Public

 

Change needs to be radical. It needs to be immediate. 

 

And it needs to be public. 

 

And it’s never been easier to be public about your new identity. 

 

When you get to the gym at 5 am, post it on Instagram. When you start eating healthier, put it on Facebook. When you actually start that side hustle you’ve been talking about, put it online.

 

You get the picture. 

 

When you make your actions public, you’re saying to everyone you know, “this is who I am.” And when you do that, it makes you accountable. 

 

Look, at the end of the day, anybody can get up and sweat at the gym for a day or two. Anyone can get excited about starting out a new venture, but when you publicly declare what you’re doing, people are gonna remind you a week from now and then a month from now, “hey how’s that side hustle you were talking about a while back? Still working on that?”

 

Because the truth is consistency and the long haul does matter. It matters a lot. 

 

And when you make your moves public it holds you accountable for the long haul. But it also works because it solidifies your change at the level of your identity, which is where all change must happen.

 

When your friends and family start seeing your new habit on Facebook or Instagram, then they’ll start to notice and talk about it. That’s where it becomes part of your identity. And change has to happen at the level of your identity for it to last.
