Self-care is about productivity

Mar 22, 2022

Take care of yourself and do more

Self-care is important. Self-care matters.

Take care of yourself and be more productive.

You want results.

When you’re focused on results you think about action and what you can do.

Nothing wrong with this.

But when you focus too much on action and neglect self-care, you take away your ability to be more productive.

Remember that removing anxiety is one of the key ways to make your brain more efficient. When you take away anxiety, your brain is better at achieving your goals.

Focus too much on “always doing” without taking care of yourself and you create anxiety.

And that’s bad.

Be productive. Be active. But don’t forget to take care of yourself.

“Process, not goals.”

Be process-oriented, not goal-oriented.

Don’t be so focused on goals that you forget the process. If you...

How your habits reflect your identity

Mar 08, 2022

Use this knowledge for change

The habits you have - good and bad - fit your identity.

Just like your clothes fit your body, your habits fit who you are now.

Change your identity to change your habits.

Think about it. You want to look sexy on the beach this summer. What has to change first, your body or your swimsuit?

If you want to lose weight, you can’t just buy a smaller pair of pants and expect to solve the problem.

Believe me, I’ve tried.

If you want to look sexier or lose weight, you have to start with your body first. You have to get in shape and solve the underlying issue. Then you find the clothes that fit.

It’s the same with habits. People try to change their habits first, but that won’t work.

Habits form around your identity. Just like the only clothes you can wear are the ones that fit your body. It’s the same with habits. Your habits...

Say this when bad habits tempt

Feb 22, 2022

"You’re not that guy."

When you find yourself tempted to fall into an old habit, one that you want to change, you MUST remind yourself that you’re not that person.

You’re not that woman. You’re not that man. Not anymore.

Tell yourself this consistently and consciously to stop a bad habit.

Habits must form on the level of your identity.

This is the Be - Do - Have model. You can read more about it here.

You act out your identity.

Your actions are a direct result of how you perceive yourself and how you think others perceive you.

This takes place on BOTH the conscious and the subconscious level.

You’re not happy when your actions are out of line with your identity.

And your brain wants to make you happy.

That’s why your brain will seek out habits that are in line with your identity.

Ever notice that you rationalize bad habits? Or that you find some comfort...

What is the Be - Do - Have model?

How your identity drives your habits

I want to share with you something that has transformed my life and tons of others.

It’s called the Be - Do - Have model.

Ready to transform your life?

Focus on who you are first and who you want to be BEFORE you start thinking about what you want and how to form habits.

You’re not going to have the success you want until you become the person that has that success. It’s all about identity.

Identity

How does this happen? How can you shift perspective to your identity?

Sounds hard.

But it’s not. Because if you have a goal in mind - something that you want or a habit you want to form - then you already have a corresponding identity attached to it.

You just haven’t made yourself aware of it.

When you think about getting up every morning to work out at the gym. Hit the pool. Lift some weights. You’re already imagining that person you want to...

How your beliefs drive your habits

Dec 28, 2021

Change your beliefs, change your habits

Before you think about the new habits you want, think about the old beliefs you have now.

If you try to change a habit without checking your beliefs, then it will be much harder to make that change permanent.

You might change a habit for a short time. You might get up in the morning and go to the gym for a week or two.

You might start eating healthy for a little while, but if your underlying beliefs don’t change, then the new habit won’t last.

Our habits always snap back into alignment with our beliefs.

Why?

That’s because our beliefs affect our habits. And our brains will always seek alignment between our beliefs and our habits.

Your subconscious will produce results in your life that are congruent with what you believe. In a weird way, it’s a way of keeping you happy, because our brains don’t like conflict.

Because your brain wants to...

My RIP method for creating habits that last

Oct 12, 2021

Radical, Immediate, Public

To create lasting, effective change in your life use the RIP method.

Do something radical, do it immediately, and do it publicly.

This is a simple idea, but I’ll briefly explain each part.

Radical

To create change do something that is radically different from what you’ve done before. There’s a time and place for slow and steady wins the race, but there’s also a time for making big, bold moves.

Radical doesn’t mean “desperate.” It just means doing something big with the confidence that you’re going to pull it off. Habits have to take root at the level of your identity. When you make a big move, you’re telling yourself on a subconscious level, “this is me.”

If you’re gonna start getting up early in the morning to work out, don’t ease your way into it. Don’t just gradually move the clock back. Be...

Never be the best in the room

Aug 10, 2021

Hang out with people better than you

In an earlier habit hack, I talked about the importance of your environment.

Your personal environment is even more important to your success.

In order to be your best, never be the best in the room.

You want your friends to be smarter, wealthier, and healthier than you.

It’s a paradox.

If you want to be the best, make sure you’re not the best (in the room).

Surround yourself with people that will challenge you to be the best version of yourself.

Here are three reasons why you should never be the best in the room.

1 - Copy success

Surround yourself with the best and give yourself examples of success to imitate.

Everyone thinks they’re unique. Guess what? You are unique! That’s absolutely true. That’s one of the reasons why this habit hack is focused on creating your best self.

But you still learn through imitation....

How patience leads to success

Jul 27, 2021

Patience + process = success

For this habit hack, I want to get a little philosophical.

But I’ll keep it simple.

Here it goes...

Be patient.

But wait there’s more.

Be patient...and stick to the process.

When you do both of these things, you will see results. Whether it’s in your personal life or your business or your health. Be patient with yourself, stick to the process that you’ve made for yourself, and you will see results.

How is this a hack?

I can hear what you’re saying, isn’t a hack supposed to make something faster and easier?

Well, yes and no. Any habit hack is different. Some are practical methods to get things done faster for sure.

But mostly a habit hack is just a way of hacking your brain to get results. That means hacking your way past typical human behaviors that can trip you up.

And one of the behaviors that you...

The scary power of accountability

Jun 15, 2021

Check yourself before you wreck yourself

If you want a shortcut to creating change, start being accountable to others.

For this habit hack, I want to make a simple and direct point. And this one is so powerful that there’s no need to go in depth.

Do you want change?

If the answer is yes, then define that change. Be specific. Visualize and define what it is that you want.

Once you’ve done that, articulate what behaviors need to change for you to reach that goal. Define them clearly so that anyone can measure them.

Then (and this is hard)...tell someone you’re going to make that change.

It’s really as simple as that.

I’ve repeatedly said that change has to happen on the level of IDENTITY. I call this the BE - DO - HAVE model.

BE - DO - HAVE

Be the identity you want. The identity that makes you do what you need to do in order to have the things you...
