Mind dumps - an easy way to get stuff done

What are Mind Dumps?

Good ideas are simple, counterintuitive, and link to other good ideas.

The concept of mind dumps fits all criteria. For example it’s another easy way to overcome procrastination. Plus, it’s easy to do.

Mind dumps are easy...give it a try

A mind dump is where you take your ideas and put them on paper.

Anybody can do it. But why does it work?

It works because it lets you get all of your thoughts and emotions out on paper (or a word doc, whatever works). Write down everything. Write down your plans and all that you consider actionable. But also write down all of your thoughts and worries and concerns. Once everything is on paper, it frees your mind to work more effectively.

And it works with everything. Let’s say you have an idea for a new marketing plan for your business. Or you want to start getting healthier. You want to get started on a goal, but you’re not sure where to get started or how all of your plans fit together.

Too often, we have big plans that stay in our heads, because we don’t know how to plan them out or where to start. The more ideas stay in your head, the more stress it generates, and the more brain power you have to use just thinking about them.

When you put your ideas on paper, it lets you use your brainpower for getting things done. Mind dumps let you use technology to be more productive.

Mind dumps are technology

Paper is technology. And a mind dump is a way to use technology to be more productive.

I get it. Saying paper is technology probably got me a few eyerolls. But technology is anything that lets you augment or adds to your natural abilities. We may think it means smartphones and self-driving cars, but tech frees you up to get more done.

Mind dumping is a way of treating paper like a second brain. Sounds corny, but it works. Writing is thinking, so when you write down all of your thoughts and emotions, it allows you to outsource your thinking power onto that piece of paper.

Look at all of your ideas and plans. Which ones make sense? Which worries are pointless? Which ideas connect to other ideas and what is more important? Your brain is powerful, but we only have so much bandwidth. Mind dumping lets you free up that bandwidth so that your brain can actually be productive.

Mind dumps are tech. Seriously. It’s a way of out-sourcing Your brain’s information processing power. Outsource it to paper and let your brain focus on the more important part, thinking.

Mind dumps get rid of of the worries and limiting beliefs

When you mind dump, write down the thoughts that give you stress and anxiety. When your brain uses less energy dealing with anxiety, it’s more efficient and it achieves its goals better.

It’s that simple. A lot of habit hacks are focused on this. You’ll notice that this is not that different from the mechanism behind overcoming procrastination and the “imperfect action is better than no action” habits hacks.

A big part of the method that I’ve developed with the Identity Factor is based on removing the anxiety and limiting beliefs that keep your brain from achieving what you want.

One more advantage of mind dumps

Mind dumps have one more obvious strength. It lets you see that you actually do have some pretty good ideas.

It goes without saying - which means it needs saying - but sometimes just sitting down and putting it on paper is the only way to realize how many good ideas you have. Or realizing how pointless your fears are.

Most of us experience anxiety based fear. It is what it is. But it’s good to have a clear demonstration from time to time that our fears aren’t as big as we imagine.

Mind dumps. Dump your ideas and dump your anxiety.
